What can I expect during a Session? Movements and exercises performed standing and on the floor or ground. All exercises strengthen deep lower abdominals and pay great attention to proper posture, alignment and movement. A specific focus on functional fitness, balance or fall prevention depends on your needs and goals. Indoors: barefoot or in non-slip socks or soft ballet shoes; with a mat or carpet; in your home, building’s gym, terrace or rooftop.
Outdoors: with shoes and a mat; in a park or backyard. All props are provided.
What happens during a Walk? Walks are opportunities to examine how you use your feet, ankles, knees, hips and and abdominal muscles as you navigate the city and its green spaces. Are you using these parts of your body correctly? How long is your stride? How fast? Are your feet straight? Do you hit the ground with your heels first? How do you negotiate obstacles and react to skateboarders, electric bikes, children running free, jumping dogs or people reading a screen heading straight toward you? We will answer these questions and implement strategies for efficient and assured walking.
What do you do in Advanced Balance Class? Work on your posture, alignment and lower-body strength while recruiting the power of your lower abdominals and feet. Inspired by Dr. Emily Splichal’s BARE™ workouts, this progressive sequence of increasingly complex movements is built around the single-leg stance.
Indoors: barefoot or in non-slip socks or soft ballet shoes; in your home, building’s gym, lounge, terrace or rooftop; with a mat or carpet. All props are provided.
What’s the Senior Fitness Test? This battery of tests assesses the physical attributes adults ages 60+ need to perform daily activities. It was conceived by Professors Roberta E. Rikli and C. Jessie Jones of California State University at Fullerton. Your scores will be compared to national norms and functional fitness standards developed from data collected from more than 7,000 adults age 60+. The scores identify the weaknesses that are causing your mobility problems and help devise an exercise program that targets these weaknesses.
Indoors: with shoes, a chair and a wall. In your home, building’s gym, terrace or rooftop.
